Alpha hydroxy acids, a group of compounds used by the cosmetics industry, have had a significant impact on the lives of consumers. Glycolic acid has been reported to improve acne, pseudofolliculitis barbe, ichthyosis/xerosis, as well as premature aging of the skin. Although these results have been described in detail, actual mechanisms of action are not clearly understood. Numerous theries have been proposed, ranging from glycolic acid acting as an anti-inflammatory agent to the theory that glycolic acid promotes coenocytes discohesion. However, all roads appear to lead back to the process of "skin nominalization."
